Black liberation movements embraced Islam as a rebuke to White Christian supremacy.

Evidence

In two of these cities, Chicago and Newark, a new Black Liberation movement developed that appropriated Islamic identity as a rebuke to White Christian supremacy. Organizations such as the Nation of Islam (NOI), founded in 1930 in Detroit, and the Moorish Science Temple, founded in 1913 in Chicago and later renamed the Moorish Science Temple of America, called on Blacks to “revert” to Islam, their forefathers having been stripped of their African Muslim identities by their Protestant slave masters. The NOI flipped the script of White supremacy—which deemed Blacks heathens and Whites people of God—by declaring White people the heirs of Satan. — Sahar F. Aziz, The Racial Muslim, 565
