Black liberalism’s bankruptcy and institutional collapse leave black America uniquely exposed.

Evidence

In the end, the bankruptcy of black liberalism and its model of leadership, along with the collapse of black institutional life, make the current crisis in black America all the more dangerous. Sharpton, whom I consider a friend, is just one symptom. The problem of black leadership is all the more troublesome given that we no longer have an abundance of safe and creative spaces to combat racism, and the dominant form of black politics of the past half century has proved ineffective in tackling racial injustice today. Black America has never faced anything like this before. And leaders like the Reverend Sharpton aren’t saying a mumbling word. Something has to change. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Democracy in Black, 500
