Black institutions across America are collapsing and taking civic life with them.

Evidence

What Shani describes isn’t unique to her or to Calumet Heights. Black communities all across America are struggling. People have lost their homes. Businesses have shuttered their doors. Municipal budgets have been slashed. And black institutions, once robust places for black civic life, are withering on the vine. Folk are left with the shards of shattered communities. This is certainly not the “promised land” Dr. King dreamed of. In fact, black America is dying. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Democracy in Black, 329
