Black communities must change their own habits alongside whites
Evidence
A revolution of value could change the current course of this nation. Alongside a reimagined and reinvigorated black politics, such a plan might have a fighting chance. But we, black folk, have to change our habits too. Charlene Carruthers is the national coordinator of the Black Youth Project 100. BYP100 is composed of a hundred young black activists from across the country, who have convened to mobilize black communities beyond electoral politics. They pushed President Obama to come to Chicago to address the crisis of gun violence in the city after the death of Haidiya Pendleton, the fifteen-year-old student killed a week after performing at the president’s inauguration in 2013. They were successful, but not satisfied in the least. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Democracy in Black, 632
