Black class alliances with northern capital were inherently short-lived and opportunistic
Evidence
Abbasâs reaction was to bury the hatchet with Messali, and on 14 March in the fateful town of SĂ©tif, and in another rare moment of unity, all the principal components of nationalism joined hands in a new grouping called Amis du Manifeste et de la LibertĂ© (A.M.L.). In the most precise terms yet, it restated its aim as being âto propagate the idea of an Algerian nation, and the desire for an Algerian constitution with an autonomous republic federated to a renewed French republic, anti-colonial and anti-imperialistâ. This new brief moment of unity was to perish finally amid the bloodshed and recriminations of SĂ©tif the following year; nevertheless, the A.M.L. declaration did establish a principle of immense political and propaganda importance. â Horne, Alistair, A Savage War of Peace- Algeria 1954-1962, 122 (

This led to a feud in which each side sought outside help; the defeated Ayyal Ahmad turned to Haji Shirmarke âAli and his Habar Yunis clansmen for support. With this backing, they were then able to re-establish themselves and to expel the Ayyal Yunis who moved to the small roadstead of Bulhar, some miles to the west of Berbera. By 1846, however, the menace of other clans had led the two rival Ayyal lineages to compose their differences and Haji âAliâs services had been dispensed with: he had been âBritish Agentâ at Berbera in 1842. â I.M.
