Black Civil War service marked blacks as loyal Americans unlike other ‘foreigners’

Evidence

Northern white women missionaries became acutely aware of the contribution of black soldiers in upholding the Union once they set up mission stations in the South. Rachel Mather wrote from South Carolina to her sisters in the North: “We have needed them in the history of our country; we may need them yet again. Two hundred thousand colored soldiers, it is estimated, served faithfully in the war of the Rebellion. Unlike other foreigners among us, they are a loyal people, and may be counted upon as true to the government that enfranchised them. Policy and papacy cannot shake their allegiance.” — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 540
