Black Americans must adapt financial behavior around a tax code built on white norms

Evidence

In our current system, if you are a black American, the best way to get ahead is either by aligning your behaviors with white preferences and practices or by listening to your own preferences, but taking precautions. If you choose to mimic white behavior, do not expect to have the same freedom of choice that your white peers have. (And remember, there’s a good chance your white peers have a safety net, in the form of family support or gifts, that they’ve never told you about.) — Dorothy A. Brown, The Whiteness of Wealth, 531
