Biology only matters to psychology through the lived, meaningful body

Evidence

The enormous advance psychoanalysis made over psychophysiology is in its consideration that no factor intervenes in psychic life without having taken on human meaning; it is not the body-object described by scientists that exists concretely but the body lived by the subject. The female is a woman, insofar as she feels herself as such. Some essential biological givens are not part of her lived situation: for example, the structure of the ovum is not reflected in it; by contrast, an organ of slight biological importance like the clitoris plays a primary role in it. Nature does not define woman: it is she who defines herself by reclaiming nature for herself in her affectivity. — Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 119

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Defines the key psychoanalytic premise of the lived body versus the body-object, which grounds the whole subsequent analysis of woman.
  • XREF: Directly engages embodiment themes germane to Merleau-Ponty and the later phenomenology of the body, plus Beauvoir’s own early essays. — connects to: Biological facts only matter through the concrete value they have in action — Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 142; The mind is constituted by culture, not bare biology — Roderick M. Kramer, Geoffrey J. Leonardelli, Robert W. Livingston, Social Cognition, Social Identity, and…, 431; Lived bodily knowledge is absolute and pre-discursive, not built from explicit angles — Sarah Bakewell, At the Existentialist CafĂ©: Freedom,…, 734 (+3 more)
  • BMF: No genuine cross-domain match to any novel in the library; a thematic echo of Healers’/body-as-lived-material concerns would be a stretch, not a match.
