Benjamin’s rescuing criticism rehabilitated German Trauerspiel from its low status as drama caricature.
Evidence
In The Origin of German Tragic Drama, Benjamin applied the process of `rescuing criticism’ to German Trauerspiel and to the kind of allegory which was characteristic in it. German Trauerspiel was usually condemned as a caricature of ancient drama, and allegory was usually seen as a means of artistic expression inferior to the symbol. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 355
