Being watched cues reliably boost prosocial behavior and suppress cheating

Evidence

This does not mean, of course, that people cannot be prosocial in the absence of such incentives. There is no shortage of acts of kindness in complete anonymity. In games of cooperation, contrary to economic predictions of purely self-interested actors, there is usually some residue of prosociality even when experimenters go to great pains to guarantee complete anonymity (this is sometimes called strong reciprocity). While anonymity does not turn human beings into selfish psychopaths, there is also no question that social surveillance is a powerful and reliable mechanism to boost prosocial behavior. — Norenzayan, Ara, Big gods - how religion transformed…, 85 (#qualifies, via linked claim)
