Baldwin’s most explosive interviews were cut from I Heard It Through the Grapevine.

Evidence

In working on chapter six, I had an opportunity to visit the Dick Fontaine Paper and Film Outtakes Collection housed at Harvard University. I wanted to see what went into the making of I Heard It Through the Grapevine, and what was left on the cutting floor. I read the full transcripts of the interviews. Baldwin’s interviews of John Lewis and Ben Chavis were left out of the film.
As Chavis described what happened to him and the others, Baldwin’s rage leaps from the page. It could have easily overwhelmed the entire film. What I read gave me a sense of the depth of his anger. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Begin Again, 632
