Avant-garde performance spaces blurred boundaries between performers and audience with marathon sets.

Evidence

Members of the Arkestra were required to play multiple instruments. Everyone joined in on percussion. Some found it difficult to distinguish between the Arkestra and the audience, which also contained many musicians. The band played from 9:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. without breaks. For some tunes, the lights would go out and the Arkestra played in darkness, illuminated only by the lights flashing off their leader’s headband. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 896
