Automatic attention is sedimented past attention and belongs in any attention ecology
Evidence
In the same way that it is more difficult than we thought to determine what we are attentive to and what we are not (like with the surprises of the cocktail-party effect), we are unable to exclude automatic attention from the field of attention properly speaking (under the pretext that it does not require intention, consciousness or effort), since it often represents past, sedimented, and embodied attention in the form of habit. A good attention ecology requires that we recognize its particular contribution to our processes of individuation at each of its multiple strata. — Yves Citton, The Ecology of Attention, 373
