Audio-video interactions grow stronger with channel count and screen size

Evidence

Woodcock et al. (2019) investigated the interaction of audio and video components in 2-, 5- and 14-channel loudspeaker systems. They found that the strongest interactions were in the categories realism, sense of space and spatial clarity, and more effective as the channel count increased. The effect on stereo reproduction was negligible. This study used a 42.5-inch video display. This and smaller screens used in earlier experiments limits what can be learned. I have lived with a 10-foot (3 m) projection screen, and it alone creates a sense of “being” somewhere. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 303
