Assemblies of coupled beads reveal how parts collectively produce universal oscillation patterns.
Evidence
Our object in this chapter is to systematically construct a string under tension. We do so by treating the string as little beads connected to each other by a massless filament under tension. If our only purpose were to understand string vibrations, we would not bother to build up a string meticulously from little beads under tension. But this way, we learn how assemblies of independent parts, connected by forces, can vibrate. We discover how all the parts can collectively conspire to produce simple and nearly universal oscillations and waves of choreographed motion. β Eric J. Heller, Why You Hear What You Hear- Anβ¦, 760
