Artists translated Land Art entropy concepts into urban building interventions
Evidence
16 Matta-Clarke, who met Smithson when the artist was in residence at Cornell University and assisted on one of his projects, was perhaps Smithson’s greatest disciple, having absorbed the older artist’s lengthy explications of entropy. By 1972, Matta-Clarke was sculpting abandoned buildings in the South Bronx, a project that recalls Danny Lyons’s photographs while urbanizing Smithson’s earth works. — J.
