Art’s celebration of pure making cannot escape the purposefulness it denies
Evidence
It incurs hostility because it blurts out the secret of art and the affinity of culture to savagery. Every work of art has its irresoluble contradiction in the ‘purposefulness without purpose’ by which Kant defined the aesthetic; in the fact that it is an apotheosis of making, of the nature-ruling capacity that, as a second creation, postulates itself as absolute, purpose-free, existing in itself, whereas after all the act of making, indeed the very glorification of the artefact, is itself inseparable from the rational purposefulness from which art seeks to break away. — Theodor W. Adorno, Minima Moralia, 251
Categorization
- DEEPTHINKING: The dialectical knot — art glorifies making while denying it’s made — is stated with unusual compactness and carries Adorno’s whole theory of the aesthetic.
- XREF: Directly glosses Kant’s ‘purposefulness without purpose’; also echoes Nietzsche’s ‘Perfection must not have become’ quoted later in the same aphorism. — connects to: Art resolves real social contradictions through purely formal means — Fredric Jameson, The Political Unconscious, 1774; Genuine artistic negation requires being saturated with tradition first — Theodor W. Adorno, The Culture Industry: Selected Essays…, 165; True creativity requires transcendence projecting freely, not mere cultivation. — Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1950
