Aragon sustained eastern Mediterranean imperial ambitions it could never actually fulfill

Evidence

Aragonese ambitions in the eastern Mediterranean (and to a lesser extent, in North Africa) were not a thing of the past in 1500. Aragonese aspirations to act as protector of the eastern Christians in the Holy Land and even in Coptic Egypt may seem absurd to us nowadays (at no time did Aragon have the logistical capacity to sustain anything more than a short raid on one of the great ports of the Levant). Whether in the thirteenth century when these ambitious dreams first began to haunt Aragon’s foreign relations, or into the early 1500s under Ferdinand, the Aragonese Crown cherished that eastward-looking policy. — L.
