Apartheid collapsed partly because its collectivism clashed with global neoliberal individualism
Evidence
By the late 1980s the South African economy was deeply depressed, foreign economic and political support had taken flight. Globalizing forces of political economy were emphasizing the neoliberalizing individualization of social life with which collective emphases of apartheid were considered deeply at odds. Along ironically with soviet collectivism to which it took itself to be so opposed, and for intersecting reasons, apartheid had fallen dramatically out of step with the times. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1566
