Analysis of variance tests whether any independent variable affects a dependent variable.

Evidence

Testing typically produces a large data set to which proper statistical methods must be applied. In simple cases, some basic descriptors, such as means, variances, and 95% confidence intervals can be used. However, often the influence of attributes in the tests on the data obtained should be examined using appropriate parametric or non-parametric statistical tests. Quite commonly analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used, which answers the question, ‘do any of the independent variables have an effect on the dependent variable?’ If an independent variable is found to have an effect, posthoc tests can then be used to measure how the independent variable affects the result. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 950
