An SS guard engineered a reunion killing to toy with a prisoner’s hope.
Evidence
There are countless examples. One comes from a description of a witness’s testimony at the trial of Klaus Barbie, “the butcher of Lyons”: “Simone LaGrange was sent to Auschwitz and, one day, saw her father there. He was in a column of men marching by. She waved and an SS guard asked if that was really her father. ‘Then go kiss him, girl,’ the guard said. She ran to her father. The guard shot him” (Reeves, 1987, p. A9). — Leonard S. Newman and Ralph Erber (eds.), Understanding Genocide, 628
