An enslaved preacher named Caesar Blackwell ministered at a white-founded Montgomery Baptist church
Evidence
Denise was a descendant of the McLemores and through her I learned that the Antioch Baptist Church was founded as a white church, and then became mixed when an enslaved man named Caesar Blackwell was asked to be the preacher. His name struck me as familiar—“Caesar” was listed in the Taylor slave indexes that Chris Childs had sent me in the same family grouping with Papa Renty’s children: Renty, Delia, and Hector. — Tamara Lanier, From These Roots, 516
