An antiracism official’s past enforcement roles undermined his leftist credibility.
Evidence
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gaubert had been put in charge of antiracism by Charles Pasqua, the man for whom the journalistic cliché ‘hard-line Interior Minister’ should surely have been invented. Having been the ‘Monsieur Racisme’ of Pasqua, more generally associated with repressive crackdowns on migrants, gave Gaubert an obvious credibility problem in the eyes of the Left, dominant in the other three groups. — James Renton, Ben Gidley (eds.), Antisemitism and Islamophobia in Europe, 1357
