Allport anticipated which identity research questions later proved important

Evidence

It is striking that Allport anticipated many of the research issues that proved to be important later: for example the importance of the self-enhancement motive, the ā€œcontentā€ of social identities, and identity strength. Further, the concept of ā€œreference groupsā€ is reflected in some of the thinking in acculturation research, and the distinction between ingroup bias and outgroup derogation has proved useful. Finally, Allport may well have been correct in suggesting that strong ingroup identification does not necessarily go hand in hand with heightened competitiveness and outgroup derogation. — John F.
