Al-Andalus’s Umayyad dynasty was known contemporaneously as the Marwanids
Evidence
Since the fall of the Caliphate in the eleventh century, al-Andalus had not been ruled in the Umayyad name, and indeed that name might not be well received in many parts of the Islamic world. The Shiite lands were not the only regions that regarded the Umayyads as more worthy of execration than of respect. During the great days of what we now think of as the Umayyad Caliphate of the West, it was in any case the name Banu Marwan (Marwanids) that was in current use, rather than Banu Umayya. — L. P. Categorization
- DEFINE: Clarifies that ‘Umayyad’ is a modern retrospective label; contemporaries called the dynasty Banu Marwan.
