Adorno personally drafted a defense memorandum later sent under Horkheimer’s name

Evidence

Following Mayer’s critique, Adorno himself drafted a memorandum titled ‘Notizen zu Mayer’ (‘Notes to Mayer’) which Horkheimer used to compose his response letter to Mayer, partially quoting it verbatim. In this memorandum, Adorno attempts once again todefend his analysis of the presentstate of music with Marxian categories: Paramount among Mayer’s theoretical objections is the claim that I haphazardly isolated out the fetish chapter of Capital, or the antitheses of use-value and exchange-value,therebyproducinga rigid musical-sociological schema while disregarding other important motifs of Marxian analysis, and particularly the theory of circulation. — Dirk Braunstein, Adorno’s Critique of Political Economy, 461
