Adorno came to see critical reflection and team-based empirical research as practically irreconcilable
Evidence
Teamwork in Social Research’ was a radicalization of the self-criticism of empirical social research about which Adorno had stated, in Group Experiment, that he would be able to give it further productive development. He now saw criticism and empiricism as dividing into two components that were irreconcilable in practice. `Whoever knows the practical side of social research from his own work will have been forced to observe that, in the areas of research being discussed, teamwork cannot be replaced by the work of an individual scholar of the old style. “One-man studies” are always dubious, and mostly amateurish.’ Simply carrying out interviews to gather a representative sample, for example, could not be managed by a single individual alone. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 2114
Categorization
- XREF: Connects to the broader critical-theory claim that institutionalization and method-level abstraction erode the individual’s capacity for totality-perspective insight; resonates with Horkheimer’s and Adorno’s critique of instrumental reason in Dialectic of Enlightenment. — connects to: Adorno conceived theory and empirical research as mutually constitutive via the dialectical method. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 990; Adorno coined the term ‘administrative research’ to describe client-driven media studies — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 999; Adorno’s empirical agitator research remained methodologically unorthodox and partially unexecuted. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 1512 (+4 more)
- DEEPTHINKING: The passage captures a genuinely dense structural insight: honest teamwork forces elimination of individual perspective, so the machinery of collaborative research is itself a force of abstraction that strips substance — not from bad intention, but from objective constraints.
