Adorno’s ideal analyst pushes reality to extremes so hope emerges only in darkness
Evidence
His conception of a correct form of psychoanalysis was not, as Fromm thought, to let the patient experience something of what things ought to be like; nor, as Freud prescribed, to approach the patient as a tolerant representative of the reality principle. Instead, it was to confront the patient as someone who would take the reality principle to its extreme, who would bring the patient into a darkness in which the light of hope would begin to shine. Adorno did not ask himself whether what might be true at the level of aesthetic theory or the theory of class struggle would be applicable without further difficulty to individual therapy. The danger that `kindness’ would lead to naive conformism was at least as great as the danger that hard disillusionment of the patient would either reinforce the illness or make the patient cynical. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 1107
Categorization
- XREF: The ‘darkness in which light shines’ motif echoes Benjamin’s theological dialectic and Adorno’s treatment of theological motifs as suspended. — connects to: Adorno held that art anticipating despair moves reality toward change — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 2236; Adorno held that critical theory resists most effectively precisely where reality seems irresistible — Dirk Braunstein, Adorno’s Critique of Political Economy, 1618; Defensiveness about Nazi crimes signals shock and warrants hope, yet Adorno undermined that hope. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 2028 (+1 more)
- QUESTION: Adorno’s stated position contradicts his own never-having-been-analyzed status, and he never tests it clinically — worth chasing how this gap mattered.
