Access to care alone fails to fix racist health outcomes.

Evidence

That’s why it’s not enough to provide access to a broken system—you have to try to move the system in the right way. Senator Elizabeth Warren and then-Senator Kamala Harris each had plans to deal with ameliorating racism in the healthcare field. Warren’s plan focused on financial incentives for hospitals, while Harris’s focused on implicit bias training and a pilot program assigning a caseworker for Medicaid beneficiaries with high-risk pregnancies. The success of those approaches was far from proven, but they are significant because they recognized that access alone was insufficient to create better health outcomes for black Americans. — Dorothy A.
