About 80% of US executions occur in southern states, led by Texas

Evidence

It should be noted in passing that over the years, virtually all of the states have imposed the death penalty at various times. However, this seeming consensus is misleading. In fact, the nation is deeply divided on the issue of capital punishment. As documented earlier, the southern states are the most consistent practitioners of punishment by death, with about 80% of the executions carried out there, with most of them in Texas (Top 15 counties by execution, 2013). However, if corrected for population size, the Texas rate of executions may not differ from those of its southern brethren. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 1840
