A well-meaning missionary’s work can unintentionally serve colonial oppression

Evidence

The matter is about how the colonial mission was enabled and what role men like Tempels played in the civilization of the Muntu. In particular, we must pay attention to how the intention that Tempels had ended up achieving the opposite of what was initially intended. It could just as well turn out to be the case that Tempels was unaware of the contradictions his situation had set for him and how he fell prey to those contradictions. However, what cannot be denied is that these contradictions had an effect on Tempels and what he subsequently presented as Bantu Philosophy. — Frans Dokman, Beyond Bantu Philosophy_…, 450
