A surplus of cheap lawyers increases litigation and legal uncertainty
Evidence
The escalation in the number of doctorates in civil law had debased the standing of the title and the social status of those who held it, while the large number of lawyers prepared to sell their services at a low cost had greatly increased the amount of litigation. This in turn, since there were insufficient controls over the grounds on which a case was entered, increased the degree of uncertainty that surrounded all early modern legal procedure and further eroded trust in the judicial apparatus of the state. — Diego Gambetta, Trust - Making and Breaking Cooperative…, 1840
