A single expedition meant different things to each participating community

Evidence

The answer lies in the different ways in which the expedition was interpreted. For Selim Qapudan, the expedition had been sent by Muhammad Alï as a means of gathering information and offering the Nilotic tribes a glimpse of the civilization that was extending its authority over their territories. For the Shilluk and the Kik, it was an act of conquest by armed men sent without warning to their land by a nameless authority. For European geographers and scientists interested in the Nile Valley, it was a knowledge-seeking campaign that opened new pathways into the “mysteries of Africa.” And for Muhammad Alï, the real author of the expedition, it was a gesture that would dignify Egyptian control of the Nile Valley with European ideals about the values and uses of such scientific information. More than that, it was an investment in the future. Muhammad Alï’s language and practice of imperialism planted the seeds of a future Egyptian empire to which future generations would be able to lay claim. In this construction, both the Sudan and Egypt represented a wished-for place, a dream empire. The expedition helped to define each for the future. By absorbing the Sudan into Egypt’s borders, Muhammad Alï distinguished Egypt from the Sudan and brought Egypt a little closer to Europe. — Eve M. Categorization

  • DEEPTHINKING: The one-act, four-interpretations structure is a genuinely dense way of showing how imperial meaning is produced locally by each audience — and the paradox that absorbing Sudan into Egypt simultaneously separated Egypt from Sudan and aligned Egypt toward Europe is central to coloniality’s internal logic.
  • SEED: Could anchor an essay on how empires legitimize expansion to their own subjects by borrowing the metropole’s scientific or civilizational vocabulary.
  • ADDENDUM: Directly complicates the Egypt-vs-Sudan colonial comparison thread across the whole book — Muhammad Ali’s empire-building in Sudan both distinguishes Egypt from Sudan and pulls Egypt closer to a European model.
