A severe dry year drove canopy birds closer to the ground
Evidence
During the extraordinarily dry āEl Ninoā year of 1983, many species moved closer to the ground in the forest, presumably to find a more equitable (less dry) environĀ ment. During 2-week sample periods from 1979 to 1982, an average of 6.9 indiĀ viduals of canopy species (range 5-11, SE = 1.0, Ī = 8) were included in samples of 355-416 captures as compared to 14 individuals in 1983 among 409 captures (t = 7.07, Ļ < .001). ā S.
