A race-specific worldview buffers Black individuals against stress damage to well-being
Evidence
The Universal Context of Racism Model assumes a cultural pattern of adaptation that takes into account the challenges of discrimination and the need to establish internalized standards of human worth. TRIOS is proposed as a worldview that directs both self-protective and self-enhancing mechanisms. … A self-report rating scale was developed to assess the degree to which one endorses the dimensions of TRIOS ( Jones, 2003). Early evidence shows that Blacks endorse the dimensions more than other race/ethnic groups, with Hispanics slightly less, and Whites and Asians similar to each other and lower still. TRIOS level has been related to prosocial values, ego-resiliency, and lower levels of self-reported stress. … TRIOS level is shown to moderate the relationship between stress and well-being so that when stress level is high, the decline in well-being is less for those high than those low in TRIOS. In some cases (e.g., with Improvisation), well-being remains positive even at high levels of selfreported stress. — , Rudman, Laurie A - On the Nature of…, 1092
