A Quebec town with no Muslims publicly outlawed stoning to assert cultural standards

Evidence

Perhaps nothing expresses the rising hysteria better than the action taken by a small rural town in Quebec to declare formally that the town forbids the stoning of women and the burning of them with acid. Explaining why a town of three hundred white citizens in which there are no Muslims felt compelled to proclaim its ‘standards’ publicly, the town’s mayor simply declared: ‘I like the way we live and I don’t want it to change.’ — Sherene Razack, Casting Out, 28

Categorization

  • CANDY: The mayor’s deadpan ‘I like the way we live’ is a perfect, self-contained anecdote of manufactured moral panic.
  • XREF: Fits the ‘immodest dress / moral panic’ thread of staged legislative theater against an absent enemy.
