A public school can place the environment at the center of its whole curriculum

Evidence

Sunnyside Environmental School is a K-8 public school in Portland, Oregon. Begun as a middle school in 1995, it expanded to K-8 several years later. The founding principles included putting the environment at the center of the curriculum, the importance of students spending time in nature, and a responsibility to the larger community. A Native American elder was part of the founding group, and the school was also designed to meet the needs of native students (Williams & Taylor, 1999). — Rebecca A.
