A prank with hot sauce on police food led to assault charges

Evidence

In February of that year, a breakfast cook at a Denny’s restaurant in Lebanon, New Hampshire, decided to play a little joke on a couple of Vermont state troopers who’d crossed over into the state for breakfast. He didn’t like police much, so he decided to douse their food with a generous helping of Tabasco sauce. The troopers weren’t happy. They said the eggs burned their mouths and upset one officer’s stomach. “We’ve got enough trouble without people screwing around with our food,” said Lebanon police lieutenant Ken Lary. Weeks later, the cook was arrested for assault and faced a punishment of up to two years in jail and a $2,000 fine. — Sheldon Solomon, Jeff Greenberg, Tom Pyszczynski, The Worm at the Core, 535
