A modicum of Khoi civil protection existed under early Company rule

Evidence

The relative casualness in earlier years about interracial interaction and certainly about intermarriage, at least between European men and women of color, began all but to disappear. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Company rule had insisted on a modicum of civil treatment of Khoikhoi. Boers were occasionally prosecuted for mistreatment on the basis of Khoi evidence, and there are cases of boers convicted of murdering Khoisan and being sentenced to Robben Island incarceration. β€” David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1367
