A medieval Italian legend’s epithets echo the Qur’an’s basmala at a distance.

Evidence

The resemblance is not exceedingly close, but it is perhaps rather closer to Ketton’s Qur’an than to the original revelation. The epithets quoted read in the Italian text, pzu umile e piu misericordioso e piu giusto … e piu saggio. Umile, in conjunction with misericordioso, may just conceivably represent ar-Rahmdn, in the basmala. The phrases would be even more curious if they were not to be explained as a distant echo of Qur’anic language. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 2299
