A half-century of formal racial suppression produced casual everyday interracial intercourse.

Evidence

There is accordingly a quadruple and quadruply interactive set of movements regarding Europe’s current affair with matters racial. The first concerns the immediate, informal interactions in daily life between individual people in their immediate intercourse – on streets, in stores, in subways. Here European civilities mix with the now 50-year history of formal racial suppression to produce, for the most part though not absolutely, a casualness about interracial social intercourse, and certainly largely a nonissue (at least in Western Europe) about interracial sex and offspring (save perhaps for the sometime exoticizing of black bodies and sexuality, most notably but not only in the case of Germans). — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 945
