A for-profit chain enrolled more black students than any HBCU
Evidence
The abrupt closure of Argosy University in 2019 provides some insight into how this occurs. For years, Argosy was a chain of for-profit colleges operating around the United States, with 17,600 students enrolled across campuses in twelve states, including one in Atlanta. (Morehouse and Spelman, by contrast, have roughly 2,200 students each.) “We used to say that Argosy was the largest HBCU,” says Chris, a behavioral health clinician in the juvenile court system who spent eight years at Argosy Atlanta—a program with 78 percent black enrollment—working toward her doctor of psychology degree. — Dorothy A.
