A famous polemic title concealed that its target was Jews, not Muslims
Evidence
Despite the full title often attributed to Martí’s work (Pugio fidei adversus Mauros et Judaeos) there is very little anti-Islamic argumentation here. The work falls into three parts, the first of which is directed against philosophical objections to revealed monotheistic religion; it seems directed against intellectual opponents in Paris (the so-called Latin Averroists), not against Jews or Muslims. Part 2 attempts to show that the Messiah has come, and part 3 attempts to prove the Trinity; these arguments are directed against Jews. — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 1918
Categorization
- XREF: Complicates the standard genealogy where Christian medieval polemic targets Muslims; connects to existing vault claims that differentiate anti-Jewish from anti-Muslim polemic traditions.
- DEFINE: Clarifies that the Pugio fidei title is a scholarly attribution, not evidence of sustained anti-Islamic content.
