A dual-loyalty Algerian writer died just as peace neared

Evidence

The last to die was Mouloud Feraoun, hit by twelve bullets in the chest. The previous month he had entered in his Journal on a rare note of joy: “The war in Algeria is ending. Peace to those who are dead. Peace to those who are going to survive. Let the terror cease. Vive la liberté!” — Horne, Alistair, A Savage War of Peace- Algeria 1954-1962, 1582

Categorization

  • XREF: Feraoun as a Camus-like figure — the dual French-Kabyle allegiance echoes Camus’s own impossible position; dead link to the French educational mission.
