A culture’s central domain is privileged by value-perspective, not by logical precedence.

Evidence

In our account of paradigm, the peripheral domains are as subsidiary and supportive as they are peripheral, their relegation to this status being not the function of logical or ontological precedence of the central domain, but rather the entrenchment and anchoring of this domain within a system constituted no less by the subsidiary domains. The privileging within a culture of a particular domain is therefore a perspectivist act, one that is a function of the culture’s placement of a particular value (or set of values) that appears more prominent in that domain than in others. But that value must, per force, pervade the subsidiary domains, which at once partake in producing, and are produced by, it. — Wael Hallaq, Restating Orientalism, 73

  • XREF: Builds on framing parallels with the diamond-trade chapters on how institutional arrangements are held in place by surrounding supporting structures.
  • DEEPTHINKING: The claim that subsidiary domains co-constitute the central domain, being both produced by and producing its paramount value, reverses the intuitive top-down picture of paradigms and repays slow rereading.
