A cholera epidemic exposed Vilna’s gap between Jewish erudition and ethics
Evidence
The institutional crisis. In approximately 1840, when Salanter was thirty, a specific incident catalyzed his subsequent career. Several biographical accounts preserve the incident: Salanter, observing the operational practice of the Vilna Jewish community during a period of cholera epidemic, was substantially troubled by the gap between the community’s Talmudic-halakhic erudition and its operational ethical-character expression. Specifically, the community’s wealthy members were not, on Salanter’s analysis, demonstrating the operational ethical-character traits that the Talmudic tradition prescribed — generosity to the poor, careful attention to communal-welfare obligations, gentleness toward subordinates and dependents, including children. And the community’s recognized rabbinic authorities were not, on Salanter’s analysis, doing sufficient operational work to address this gap. — , The Rod and the Child, 2669
