A centered watcher who sees all cells is inevitably visible from all cells
Evidence
The difficulty would not be removed, even though the chapel part in the centre were thrown out, and the inspector’s apartment extended so as to swallow up that central part, and occupy the whole circle. My expedient of diametrical screens, or partitions crossing each other at right angles, would not answer the purpose: if they extended all the way from the circumference to the centre, leaving no vacuity at that part, they would divide the whole circle into separate quadrants: a man could be in but one of these quadrants at a time, and while he was in that one he could see nothing of the cells corresponding to the others. Stationed exactly in the centre, he would see indeed, but he could at the same time be seen from, all the cells at once. No space can ever be so exactly closed as to exclude the light, by any living figure. — Jeremy Bentham, The Panopticon Writings, 295
Categorization
- XREF: This geometric impossibility — you cannot be in all quadrants at once, and centered you are lit — connects to the reader’s panopticon mapping where the Party achieves omnivoyance without occupying any single visible body. — connects to: Unlocatable individual addressing makes all prisoners assume they are watched — Jeremy Bentham, The Panopticon Writings, 46; An opaque dummy object substitutes for the inspector in the lantern undetected — Jeremy Bentham, The Panopticon Writings, 61; Panoptic power rests on central inspection plus unseen watching — Jeremy Bentham, The Panopticon Writings, 152 (+2 more)
- DEFINE: Clarifies the operational definition of panoptic inspection: it is fundamentally a scanning model (moving circuit), not simultaneous omniviewing — a helpful precision for the analytical thesis.
