A broken magical mill explains the sea’s salt and a nation’s plenty
Evidence
Most of it sank into the deep sea — and that, the Finns say, is why the sea is rich, why there is salt and treasure in the ocean. But some pieces of the Sampo washed ashore onto the land of Kalevala — and those fragments brought enough good fortune and plenty to the Finnish land that its people would prosper ever after. So the magic mill of endless wealth was won, and lost, and broken — but its broken pieces, scattered between the sea and the land, became the source of all the plenty the Finns would ever know: a bittersweet ending, in which the dream of endless, perfect riches is shattered, yet its fragments are exactly enough. — , A Year of World Stories, 13968
