1820 British settlement of the Cape mixed rich investors with destitute families
Evidence
In 1820, 4,000 British settlers were brought to the Cape, largely to settle at or close to the eastern frontier to reinforce territorial control in the face of continuing and increasingly bold indigenous raids, on one hand, and growing boer disgruntlement, on the other. The British settlers mixed a small cadre of wealthier adventurers looking for long-term investment opportunities and a much larger contingent of economically distressed and socially alienated families. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1408
